Mediators could be used for small business tax disputes
03/02/2012
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is piloting a scheme where its own inspectors act as ‘mediators’ in tax disputes involving small business owners.
The trial is taking place in the North West and North Wales, with small businesses being offered the use of a free mediator if they believe tax demands from HMRC are unfair.
The mediator in question is a trained HMRC official and those requesting the service will have to wait 30 days for a decision, which will depend on whether an official is available.
If successful, the scheme could be rolled out in other parts of the country.
HMRC is currently under increasing pressure to treat small businesses fairly. It is currently reviewing controversial plans to fine owners up to £3,000 if they fail to keep accurate trading records from April 2012.
