Taxpayers’ Charter Is Unveiled

26/11/2009

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has announced details of its long-awaited charter, which offers specific pledges on how taxpayers can expect to be treated, while also setting out the obligations on taxpayers in return.

The organisation has pledged to treat taxpayers with respect, provide help and support, treat everyone even-handedly and act with professionalism and integrity.

The idea for a charter was first mooted three years ago, and consultation on what it should contain began in February.

The charter’s main points are as follows:

Your rights:

  • Respect you
  • Help and support you to get things right
  • Treat you as honest
  • Treat you even-handedly
  • Be professional and act with integrity
  • Tackle people who deliberately break the rules and challenge those who bend the rules
  • Protect your information and respect your privacy
  • Accept that someone else can represent you
  • Do all we can to keep the cost of dealing with us as low as possible

Your obligations:

  • Be honest
  • Respect our staff
  • Take care to get things right
