Businesses Asked for Views on Access to Finance

24/06/2009

Small and medium-sized businesses have been invited by the government to give their views on the difficulties they are currently facing in securing the capital they need to fund their growth plans.

The Rowlands Growth Capital Review is set to look at what smaller firms have to say and decide whether government intervention is needed to make sure adequate finance is available to help businesses recover from the recession.

Evidence from previous downturns suggests that the period immediately following a recession is generally the most difficult time for small and medium-sized enterprises looking to raise long-term growth finance.

The review team will also be gathering opinions from other interested parties, including banks, private equity firms and institutional investors, before coming to their conclusions.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: “Small businesses will play an important role in the recovery of the British economy. These businesses now have the opportunity to contribute to our thinking on the frameworks we will need to put in place for a competitive, thriving market.”

Christopher Rowlands, who is leading the review, said: ”We are keen to hear directly from businesses to ensure our recommendations reflect their needs in an appropriate way.”

Businesses can offer views and evidence until 17 July, by visiting www.berr.gov.uk/files/file51817.doc.
