Changes to VAT registration offices
01/10/2007
HM Revenue & Customs have announced that with effect from 1 October
2007 all general paper VAT registration applications must be sent to
the Wolverhampton VAT office.
The offices to which special registration applications must be sent
are as follows:
• VAT group applications, applications involving the transfer
of an existing VAT number, or the Flat Rate or Annual Accounting Schemes
- Grimsby VAT Registration Office.
• Applications involving the Agricultural Flat Rate Scheme - Carmarthen
VAT Registration Office.
• Applications by persons with no business establishment, agent
or tax representative in the UK - Non Established Taxable Persons Unit,
Aberdeen.
Online applications can still be made, and for the moment these will
continue to be directed to the Carmarthen, Grimsby, Newry and Wolverhampton
offices.

It is most surprising that this reorganisation should have been carried
out at a time when there are almost 50,000 outstanding applications,
and businesses are having to wait up to several months to become registered.
Whilst there may be long-term benefits, there must surely be an adverse
short-term effect, and one would have thought that HMRC would have
waited until the current backlog had been cleared first.
