It's official - tax legislation has doubled since 1997

Shadow Paymaster General Mark Francois has revealed that the UK now has more tax legislation than any other country in the world, at almost 10,000 pages.

By comparison, the United States federal tax legislation has 5,100 pages, whilst Germany only has 1,700 pages!

The number of pages of UK legislation has more than doubled since 1997. An article in The Economist commented: "Each episode of The Flowerpot Men, a children’s television show, used to end with the question: ‘Was it Bill or was it Ben?’ Where Britain’s rising tax burden is concerned many businessmen know the answer: it was Gordon.”
