Climbdown on tax return deadlines
15/07/2006

Following widespread criticism, Lord Carter has revised his original
proposals to bring forward the deadline for filing self assessment
returns.
He had initially recommended that the deadline should be changed from
31 January to 30 September (or 30 November, if filed by internet),
but the tax profession and many others pointed out that this would
be impractical and unsatisfactory for several reasons.
The revised recommendation, which has been accepted by HM Revenue and
Customs, is that the deadline should remain 31 January for returns
which are filed by internet, with the deadline for paper returns being
brought forward to 31 October. The change is due to take effect for
the 2007/08 tax year, for which the deadline will be 31 October 2008
(paper return) or 31 January 2009 (filing by internet).
