Newswire Amusing Answers

We know that many clients enjoy our monthly newswires, with the regular ‘Brain Teaser’ puzzles. While a lot of people show their powers of deduction by coming up with the correct answers each month, we do occasionally get some slightly more humorous responses, which always raise a smile here in the Harris Lipman office. Here are some of the best ones we have received:

q. What do the initials SLR stand for on the Mercedes - Benz range of cars?

a. Sport Leicht Rennsport or Sport Light Racing (correct answer)

  • Does SLR refer to the road-holding?
    Slides both Left and Right

q. What does the financial abbreviation P&L stand for?

a. Profit & Loss (correct answer)

  • In my book P & L = "Pizza" and "Lasagne"
But I'm open to other interpretations !!??
  • The answer to “What does P&L stand for” depends on the state of the economy.
In good times it stands for “Profits and Lots” whereas in more challenging times it stands for “Provisions and Lies” – unless of course Harris Lipman happens to be your auditor.

q. At Wimbledon, what is the name given to the box which projects light beams across the court to detect when the ball is served outside the allowed area?

a. Cyclops (correct answer)

  • You know, because the data is on my personal file maintained for his exclusive use by Barry Lewis, that many of my antecedents, stretching back for many millennia, were 1 eyed giants and that one eye saw everything.  One eyed because everyone was poor in those days and my family couldn’t afford more!
They were nicknamed Cyclops and that name denoted that they were extremely large and had that one unaccompanied eye.  You can now probably understand why I am so tall (and handsome and charming and Adonis-like).
It was only during the middle ages that the name Cyclops was changed to OSEN because of a mistranslation from ancient Greek in to Latin and then to Ivrit (the modern word for Hebrew).  And during that period the family finances grew rapidly and we could afford that second eye!
So, you can be assured the name of that Wimbledon machine is, in modern terms, an OSEN but you can call it a Cyclops if you wish

q. What do Vulcanologists study?

a. Volcanoes (correct answer)

  • Vulcanologists hate flying and after millions of years of trying they have now found the answer...flying has now ceased.

q. What occurs twice in a week, twice in a decade but only once in a year?

a. E (correct answer)

  • At first glance that appears to a sexy question: twice in a week on honeymoon, twice in a decade for a couple who celebrated their Golden wedding and once a decade in between! But knowing how very reserved you must be working with Harris Lipman try "e".
