More than 40 professionals from the property sector were given an expert insight into how to deal with unpaid rent and service charges at a joint seminar presented by Harris Lipman and London solicitors Hamlins.

Harris Lipman senior partner Barry Lewis, Anthony Perlmutter, partner in Hamlins’ commercial dispute group, and barrister Russell Stone were speakers at the event, which took place at the Royal Society for the Arts building in John Adam Street, London, on 6 March.

Topics covered included early detection of problem tenants, options available if a tenant becomes insolvent, quick recovery of outstanding sums and a guide to the Tribunal, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007, along with an opportunity for questions.

Barry’s presentation at the seminar – which was titled Cash Collection in a Challenging Property Market – looked at insolvency and rescue options and some of the tools used by insolvency practitioners, like Harris Lipman, to recover money.

It also featured case studies where Harris Lipman’s intervention helped to achieve satisfactory outcomes and some useful tips to prevent and deal with debts, including the importance of carrying out a health check on tenants before letting a property and that insolvency practitioners can provide solutions, even when tenants become insolvent.

Barry said: “The seminar gave us a useful opportunity to get the message across to people involved in the property sector that insolvency practitioners have a valuable role to play and can assist in the most challenging cases.”
